The making of Wedding Cake

Something borrowed, something blue, and loads of string… Wedding Cake is a homage to a friend, inspiration, and fellow artist, Andrew Pharmer. This image was created as a gift for his wedding and also an opportunity to create a piece influenced by traditional still life paintings.

Andrew’s work relies on the use of positive and negative space. To honor this and stay true to the wedding theme of the photo, I began collecting cake molds. My search for cake molds took me through many thrift stores, garage sales, and, best of all, Creative Reuse (the holy grail of re-purposing outlets in Berkeley/Oakland, CA). I was able to find lots of old molds and other strange yet beautiful bits and bobbles.

Wedding Cake uses string, plaster, paint, a wicker monkey, live flowers, found objects, wax, and… lots of string!

Wedding Cake was designed for and shot from one specific camera point of view. No cropping was applied to the image, from negative to print.
